A somber story following the struggle of two children, Seita and his younger sister, Setsuko, who are trying to survive during World War II. Left to fend for themselves after the lost of their mother to the flames of bombs and the absence of their father who serves in the Japanese navy, Seita and Setsuko end up under the guardianship of a distant relative. But unhappy,the two set out to live on their own.
