Voices Behind the Animation

When the scenes have been put together and animated on screen, it is time to put voices to the characters. Studio Ghibli chooses people, actors or singers, who have voices they believe to match the personality of their characters.

 

Voicing-over takes time and multiple sessions of one just one life in order for it to turn out right. Actors need to make sure the dialogue follows the movement of the animation, as well as evoking the right emotions for the scene and of their character. However, in the studio, it is a lot of fun to be a part of this process.

 

Directors of this studio will guide voice-actors in how to portray their characters. But they aren't too strict on how they're performed. Directors do not mind improvisation at times. It brings more out of the character and something the director might not have thought of. Here are several clips of the process for the film Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke 1997):
