Storyboard Development

At Studio Ghibil, once an idea has been approved, a rough layout of the storyboard is developed. It is directly tackled without any scenario writing—a method Miyazaki personal loves to take. This tactic allows for the animator to freely express and carry the story in any direction. With no set guidelines or boundaries, the animator is granted excessive creative freedom. Below is a brief clip of Miyazaki working on a storyboard for his film, Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke 1997) and an image board made by Hayao Miyazaki:

Storyboards are generally filled with rough sketches of action scenes, character and background images. They are all drawn and developed first by the hands of the animator and then given to the producer to edit. The producer then reviews the flow and pace of the story, adding any suggestions and questioning where a particular scene is going. These corrections and comments will then be sent back to the animator to review himself.
